About TWAS-CASAREP

The Central and South Asia Regional Partner of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS-CASAREP) is hosted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru, India. It was established in 2003 under the leadership of Prof. C. N. R. Rao, initially as TWAS-ROCASA, with the vision of fostering scientific excellence and advancing collaboration across the Central and South Asian region.

Prof. V. Krishnan, former President of JNCASR, served as the first Coordinator of TWAS-CASAREP (2003–2022). His efforts laid the foundation for its activities and significantly enhanced its visibility and institutional strength. He was succeeded by Prof. M. R. S. Rao (2022–2023), and the TWAS CASAREP is currently led by Prof. G. U. Kulkarni (2024–present), with Dr. Jaishri Sanwal Bhatt serving as Co-Coordinator since 2023.

TWAS-CASAREP’s mandate spans Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, providing a strong platform for scientists to connect, exchange knowledge, and address regional and global challenges of sustainable development through science, technology, and innovation.

Each year, TWAS-CASAREP selects five TWAS Young Affiliates, outstanding early-career researchers who join a vibrant network of promising scientific leaders from the developing world. These young scientists contribute fresh perspectives, energy, and vision to the Academy. In addition, TWAS-CASAREP organizes scientific meetings, training programs, and capacity-building activities, fostering regional collaboration and strengthening links with the global scientific community.

TWAS-CASAREP remains committed to advancing excellence in science and empowering the next generation of researchers to contribute to sustainable development in Central and South Asia.
